Woods Hole

Ferocious current, big bass. Woods Hole, the passage between the mainland and the Elizabeth Islands, rips some of the hardest current on the coast, and the striped bass that live in it are worth the challenge.

Woods Hole is the narrow, powerful passage between the mainland at Falmouth and the head of the Elizabeth Islands. The current here runs extraordinarily hard, and the rips and eddies it creates hold striped bass, but the water demands respect and skilled boat handling.

The ground

Fish the rips, eddies and current seams through and around the passage. Bass tuck into the eddies and along the edges of the ripping current, darting out to grab bait swept past.

How to fish it

Fish soft plastics and jigs through the seams and eddies, letting them swing with the flow. The current is genuinely dangerous, so know the tide and handle the boat carefully.

Respect the current Woods Hole rips some of the strongest, most complex current on the coast, with real hazards. Know the tide, respect the flow, and only fish it when you and your boat are up to the conditions. Safety first.
Regulations Striped bass rules apply, see Massachusetts DMF.

Note: fishing regulations (size limits, bag limits, seasons, permits) change often. Always confirm current rules with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (saltwater), MassWildlife (freshwater), or NOAA Fisheries (offshore/HMS) before you keep a fish.
