Scusset Beach State Reservation sits at the east entrance of the Cape Cod Canal on the Cape Cod Bay side, with an open beach, the east breakwater/jetty, and a fishing pier. It offers a mix of surf and structure fishing, and it is a well-known early-season spot for mackerel before the striper season fills in.

The spots

The jetty and pier reach out to deeper water and the Canal's east current, while the open beach offers surf casting. The Canal current near the east end concentrates bait and bass.

How to fish it

Early in the season, catch mackerel on sabikis off the jetty and pier, both for bait and for eating. As stripers arrive, fish jigs and soft plastics in the current and plugs on the beach at low light.

Tip Scusset is a great place to load up on live mackerel in spring. Jig a sabiki off the jetty, keep them lively, and you have got premier bait for big bass, whether you fish them here or run them elsewhere.

Regulations State reservation rules and striped bass regulations apply. See Scusset Beach State Reservation and Massachusetts DMF.

Reading is a great start. The fastest way to get good is a day on the water with someone who does it every day.

Note: fishing regulations (size limits, bag limits, seasons, permits) change often. Always confirm current rules with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (saltwater), MassWildlife (freshwater), or NOAA Fisheries (offshore/HMS) before you keep a fish.
