Race Point (Inshore)

The tip of the Cape from a boat. Race Point off Provincetown puts deep water and a hard rip within a short run, holding striped bass and bluefish, with bottom fishing close by.

Race Point off Provincetown is where deep water and hard current sweep close to the tip of Cape Cod, and from a boat it is prime striped bass and bluefish water. The same tip that draws bluefin and surfcasters gives boat anglers a hard rip to fish and deep water close in.

The ground

Fish the rip and the deep water off the point, where current pours around the Cape's tip and stacks bait. The down-current edge of the rip is the ambush zone.

How to fish it

Work the rip with soft plastics and jigs, and throw topwater when fish push bait up. Time it to the moving tide.

Tip Fish Race Point on the tide that lights up the rip. The current around the Cape’s tip is the engine, so work the seam on the strong flow and give the slack a rest.

Regulations Striped bass rules apply, see Massachusetts DMF.

Reading is a great start. The fastest way to get good is a day on the water with someone who does it every day.

Note: fishing regulations (size limits, bag limits, seasons, permits) change often. Always confirm current rules with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (saltwater), MassWildlife (freshwater), or NOAA Fisheries (offshore/HMS) before you keep a fish.
