Nantasket Beach in Hull is one of the most accessible surf spots near Boston, a long, straight town beach with public parking and easy walk-on access. It will not always hold the giants of the outer Cape, but it offers dependable, convenient striper and bluefish fishing right off the sand.

The spots

Fish the bars and cuts along the beach and the ends near the structure and current at Hull Gut and Pemberton Point. The rocky edges and the mouth of the harbor concentrate bait and fish.

How to fish it

Low light is key on an accessible, popular beach. Small swimming plugs, soft plastics and metals matched to the bait cover it. Dawn and dusk, and the moving tide, beat a midday session.

Tip On easy-access beaches, fish the hours other people do not. Dawn, dusk and after dark on a moving tide are when bass move in close, and you will have the productive water to yourself.

Regulations Standard striped bass slot and bag rules apply, see Massachusetts DMF.

Reading is a great start. The fastest way to get good is a day on the water with someone who does it every day.

Note: fishing regulations (size limits, bag limits, seasons, permits) change often. Always confirm current rules with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (saltwater), MassWildlife (freshwater), or NOAA Fisheries (offshore/HMS) before you keep a fish.
