Mashpee-Wakeby Pond is Cape Cod’s standout freshwater fishery, a big, deep, clear kettle pond (really two connected ponds) that grows quality largemouth and smallmouth bass, holds stocked trout, and offers good pickerel fishing.
The water
The clear kettle-pond water has rocky drop-offs and points for smallmouth, weedy coves and flats for largemouth, and cold depths that support trout. The clarity means finesse and low-light fishing pay off.
How to fish it
Fish rock for smallmouth with drop shots and tubes, weedy areas for largemouth with stick worms and wacky rigs, and try spoons for the trout.
Tip Cape kettle ponds are clear, so fish early, late and deep. Bright sun pushes the bass off the shallows, so hit the low-light windows and work the deeper points and drop-offs through the middle of the day.
