Lake Cochituate is a chain of connected ponds running through a state park in Natick and Framingham, a popular and productive metro-west fishery. It holds largemouth and smallmouth bass, northern pike and good panfish, all close to the suburbs.

The water

The connected ponds offer weedy coves, docks, drop-offs and deeper basins. Largemouth and pike hold in the weeds and around cover, smallmouth on the deeper structure, and panfish everywhere.

How to fish it

Fish cover for largemouth with wacky rigs and Texas rigs, weed edges for pike with spinnerbaits on wire, and deeper spots for smallmouth with drop shots.

Tip Explore all the connected ponds. Each basin of Cochituate fishes a little differently, so if one is quiet, move through the chain, the fish and the conditions can vary from pond to pond.

Note: fishing regulations (size limits, bag limits, seasons, permits) change often. Always confirm current rules with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (saltwater), MassWildlife (freshwater), or NOAA Fisheries (offshore/HMS) before you keep a fish.
