Tuna Ground

Habs Ledge

A standout southwest of Montauk. Habs Ledge, near the 25-fathom curve southwest of Montauk Point, pulls in inshore and offshore bait, bunker and sand eels among it, and the tuna that follow.

Habs Ledge, near the 25-fathom curve southwest of Montauk Point, is a piece of structure that draws both inshore and offshore bait, bunker and sand eels included, and the tuna that hunt them. It has been a standout on the south-of-Montauk grounds in recent seasons.

The ground

The ledge and the 25-fathom curve concentrate a mix of forage as current sweeps the structure. That blend of inshore and offshore bait is what makes it productive.

How to fish it

Troll the ledge and curve to find fish, then jig or pop what you locate. When bluefin push bunker up top, be ready for a surface feed.

Tip Fish the ledge on the moving tide. The current off Montauk sweeping over Habs Ledge is what stacks the bait, so time your drifts and troll to the flow rather than the slack.

About the coordinates The coordinates on this page are an approximate reference to orient you, not a navigation waypoint. Fish move, and numbers vary boat to boat, get exact, current marks locally and always run on a plotter with proper charts.
Regulations Tuna are federally managed highly migratory species requiring an HMS permit, with category, size and retention rules that change through the season. Confirm current rules with NOAA Fisheries HMS before fishing.

Reading is a great start. The fastest way to get good is a day on the water with someone who does it every day.

Note: fishing regulations (size limits, bag limits, seasons, permits) change often. Always confirm current rules with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (saltwater), MassWildlife (freshwater), or NOAA Fisheries (offshore/HMS) before you keep a fish.
