Tuna Ground

Gordon's Gully

An early-season starting point. Gordon's Gully, south of the Vineyard in about 120 feet, is a classic first stop, a good place to find school bluefin as the season gets going.

Gordon's Gully is a well-known early-season starting point on the grounds south of Martha’s Vineyard. In roughly 120 feet of water, it is a reliable place to begin a search for school-sized bluefin as the fish arrive, a short run out from Menemsha.

The ground

The gully structure and the bait it holds make it a natural first stop. From here anglers often work east and west to the other south-of-MV spots depending on where the life is.

How to fish it

Troll to find fish and jig the marks. Early-season school fish often respond well to jigs worked through marked bait and fish.

Tip Use Gordon's Gully as a base and fan out. If the bait and fish are not there, it is a short move to the Star, the Fingers or the other south-of-MV spots, so start here and follow the life.

About the coordinates The coordinates on this page are an approximate reference to orient you, not a navigation waypoint. Fish move, and numbers vary boat to boat, get exact, current marks locally and always run on a plotter with proper charts.
Regulations Tuna are federally managed highly migratory species requiring an HMS permit, with category, size and retention rules that change through the season. Confirm current rules with NOAA Fisheries HMS before fishing.

Reading is a great start. The fastest way to get good is a day on the water with someone who does it every day.

Note: fishing regulations (size limits, bag limits, seasons, permits) change often. Always confirm current rules with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (saltwater), MassWildlife (freshwater), or NOAA Fisheries (offshore/HMS) before you keep a fish.
