Duxbury Beach & the Gurnet

A barrier beach with a current-swept point. Duxbury Beach runs out to the Gurnet at the mouth of Plymouth Bay, where moving water and structure stack up stripers and blues.

Duxbury Beach is a long barrier beach that runs south to the Gurnet, the point guarding the mouth of Plymouth Bay. The open beach offers classic surf, but the real draw is the strong current where the bay drains past the Gurnet and Saquish, a natural funnel for bait and bass.

The spots

Fish the open beach for cruising fish, and concentrate on the Gurnet and the bay mouth, where current sweeps bait past structure. The moving tide here is everything.

How to fish it

At the point, fish soft plastics and jigs in the current, and swing them through the seams like you would in a rip. On the open beach, plugs and metals at low light. Match sand eels and herring.

Tip Fish the strong tide at the Gurnet like a rip: position up-current, let your lure swing naturally through the seam, and target the down-current edge where bass hold and ambush the bait.

Regulations Over-sand permits, seasonal closures and striped bass rules apply. Check the town of Duxbury and Massachusetts DMF.

Reading is a great start. The fastest way to get good is a day on the water with someone who does it every day.

Note: fishing regulations (size limits, bag limits, seasons, permits) change often. Always confirm current rules with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (saltwater), MassWildlife (freshwater), or NOAA Fisheries (offshore/HMS) before you keep a fish.
