Broad Sound is the open water between Winthrop and Nahant, the northern doorstep of Boston Harbor. Its rips, ledges and the structure around the Graves concentrate bait and striped bass, and it links naturally to both Boston Harbor and the rocky water off Nahant.

The ground

Fish the rips, ledges and current edges across the sound, keying on where bait stacks. The area around the Graves and the outer ledges is classic structure.

How to fish it

Read and fish the rips with soft plastics and jigs, and cover water to find the bait and fish. Low light and moving tide are prime.

Tip Broad Sound fishes best on the moving tide over its ledges and rips. Find a current seam with bait, position up-current, and swing your lure through it like you would in any rip.

Regulations Striped bass rules apply, see Massachusetts DMF.

Reading is a great start. The fastest way to get good is a day on the water with someone who does it every day.

Note: fishing regulations (size limits, bag limits, seasons, permits) change often. Always confirm current rules with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (saltwater), MassWildlife (freshwater), or NOAA Fisheries (offshore/HMS) before you keep a fish.
