Assawompset Pond is the largest natural pond in Massachusetts, a broad, shallow, weedy expanse that grows strong largemouth bass, chain pickerel and panfish. As a public water supply, its access is restricted, so confirm what is currently allowed before you plan a trip.
The water
The pond is big, shallow and weedy, classic largemouth and pickerel habitat. Fish the weed edges, pads, and any deeper holes and structure. The extensive vegetation is the key cover.
How to fish it
Work the weeds and pads with weedless Texas rigs, stick worms and spinnerbaits, and buzz pickerel out of the cover with spoons and spinnerbaits on a light bite guard.
Tip On a big weedy pond, the vegetation is your map. Focus on the edges, points and holes in the weeds rather than the open water, that is where the largemouth and pickerel set up to ambush.
