Tuna Ground

the 31 Fathom Hole

A deeper hole that holds fish. The 31 Fathom Hole, south of the Vineyard, is a depth change that gathers bait and bluefin, a solid stop on the south-of-MV circuit.

The 31 Fathom Hole is exactly what its name says, a deeper hole, about 31 fathoms, on the grounds south of the Vineyard. Depth changes like this gather bait and bluefin, and it sits a short run west of the Inside Fingers.

The ground

Fish the edges of the hole, where the bottom changes depth and current concentrates bait. Fish often hold down in the deeper water, so watch your marks.

How to fish it

Because of the depth, jigging marked fish is a strong option, along with trolling the edges to locate them.

Tip Work the lip of the hole. The tuna use the depth change to trap bait, so fish along the edge where shallow meets deep rather than straight over the middle of the hole.

About the coordinates The coordinates on this page are an approximate reference to orient you, not a navigation waypoint. Fish move, and numbers vary boat to boat, get exact, current marks locally and always run on a plotter with proper charts.
Regulations Tuna are federally managed highly migratory species requiring an HMS permit, with category, size and retention rules that change through the season. Confirm current rules with NOAA Fisheries HMS before fishing.

Reading is a great start. The fastest way to get good is a day on the water with someone who does it every day.

Note: fishing regulations (size limits, bag limits, seasons, permits) change often. Always confirm current rules with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (saltwater), MassWildlife (freshwater), or NOAA Fisheries (offshore/HMS) before you keep a fish.
