Father and Son hooked up jigging mackerel

Boston Harbor Fishing Report –July 22nd – July 28th 2018

I’ve been a little neglectful on the fishing reports of late and for that I apologize. It’s been a busy couple months as the season gets into full swing. This week we got out only once with a family and young kids (2-4) for a mid day trip. The son has been having a blast catching panfish in freshwater and really wanted to see what saltwater fishing would be like.

We ended up hooking 4 schoolies on the kids gear before handing them over and in all cases the kids lost the fish. They still had a blast for to 10-20 seconds before they were able to shake the hook. To get the kids on some more action we moved on to let them jig for mackerel off Nahant. Mom, Dad, and son each caught several with a couple full stringers in there to make it interesting. The 2 yr old seems content to play with the fish in the livewell and try to feed them Hogy soft plastics… We moved on to find something bigger and missed 2 hookups before calling it a day and heading in for naptime. The kids had a blast and are still talking about it to this day!

The trick on light tackle was Hogy 4/0 swimbait hooks with Hogy skinny series 7″ Bone soft plastics. That setup has outfished all others so far this year when the stripers are blitzing on juvenile herring. For mackerel, they seem to only be interested in pink sabiki rigs of any size. All of the other colors, even on the same stringer didn’t get a sniff…
